The Hole (2009) Review:
The Hole is the newest horror release by Joe Dante, one of the greatest horror directors of all time (Gremlins, Piranha, The Howling, etc.)
As the title suggest, the movie is about a hole that contains darkness, or pure evil, or whatever you like to call it. The concept is interesting, and the fact that the hole reacts differently for each character is a real plus in the story. It allows the film to play with multiples horror genres such as clown, possession, etc.
As in most of Dante’s movies, the tone of the film is the one of the typical American teen saga, featuring the usual American family as main characters, but also the hot bimbo, etc. The characters are quite endearing, even though they tend to lack credibility. The story is also a little childish and, of course, features a happy ending that makes it very predictable. Yet, the film manages to be surprisingly captivating, mainly because of the well-made and surprisingly creepy horror scenes which greatly contrast with the overall family-oriented aspect of the movie.
The shallow ending is really disappointing, and diminishes the all experience. Still, it is an entertaining film that confirms Joe Dante’s place as one of the best horror directors alive.
