The Hole (2001) Review:
Inspired by the novel After the Hole by Buy Burt, The Hole is a thriller essentially, but one that integrate so many horror elements that it deserves to be reviewed as such. These elements include gruesome deaths, claustrophobia and great psychological tension.
A lot like in The Divide, the characters are locked up inside a bunker and quickly becomes crazy and desperate to survive. But the real innovation is in the way the story is told and keep changing as different characters tells it, taking the audience by surprise every single time. The remarkable acting by Thora Birch (American Beauty) is the second reason to watch that film, she is perfect and manages to be both touching and repulsing.
Other than that, horror and gore hounds may be disappointed by the lack of action, but the dramatic tone of the film and its unique atmosphere makes this thriller worthy of any great horror. The movie is a visual treat for the horror movie geeks. If you fall into that category, you’ll like this one.
