The Editor (2014) Review:
By the director of Father’s Day, The Editor is surely one of the strangest movie I reviewed in a long time. There simply isn’t anything like it. The movie is a parody of Italian giallo from the 70s-80s and contains multiple references to Dario Argento’s movies as well as Fulci’s ones. Most notably, there are a few scenes that are fun tribute to The Beyond and other Italian classics.
The comedy aspect is really strange – subtle at first, it quickly becomes extremely absurd. All of it is in the little details: the weird acting, the voice of the actors that is always slightly off, the weird characters, the abundance of nudity (often subtly inserted in the background). Frankly, I found all this completely unsettling at first, but after an hour or so, I got a grip of the humor and appreciated how unusual it is.
In trying to parody giallo movies, The Editor actually managed to build a very decent story. Despite the constant absurdities, there is real suspense about who the killer might be. The movie gets stranger and stranger as it goes, yet it manages to finish on a very interesting climax. It is also a very artistic movie, the imagery is beautiful and punctuated with gory moments worthy of any Italian splatters.

I would really recommend this one – even though it is not for everyone. You really have to know what you’re in for. The closest thing I can relate it to would (in terms of humor) would be John Dies at the End.
